What's 3%?

Number two processor manufacturer Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD) has announced that they're terminating 500 workers, which is 3% of their total employee base. This of course is in addition to 1,600 that they've already laid off this year.

According to AMD, the new job cuts will come from all departments except for their manufacturing operation, which they plan to spin off into a new company in cahoots with the state of Abu Dhabi. The spin-off is expected to be completed by January 2009.

Over the last 8 quarters, AMD has racked up about $5.6 billion in losses.
